Ten aircraft were allocated Aiming Point 12, and five aircraft allocated Aiming Point 13. It is not clear which aiming point the Ridge crew were allocated. The Master Bomber instructed crews who had not bombed to return with their bombs due to increasing low cloud cover over the target. The Ridge crew suffered an R/T failure so did not receive the Master Bomber's orders. They made four orbits of the target, descending to 3000’ to bomb.

Target: Coastal Battery of 5 x 4 ½” guns (2 aiming points) Load: 13x 1000lb, 4x 500lb bombs. Flew the first wave of the attack (Battle Order ‘A’ - 8 aircraft) on the first aiming point. The target was obscured by cloud so the Master Bomber ordered all aircraft to return with their bombs. NOTE: The Hardman rear crew are listed in the ORB as flying with McClelland on this operation, however logbooks show they were flying with Hardman on a training sortie at that time. I therefore propose that McClelland was flying with his regular crew, as indicated here.

The Elsham Station Narrative for 12 Oct 44 stated: 'Ridge and crew have a lucky escape as flak cuts the bombing lead just after their last bomb is released.'
