A force of 650 aircraft, including 390 Lancasters, 257 Halifaxes, and 3 Mosquitos flew this raid on Frankfurt. The German control rooms could plot the bomber force as soon as it left the English coast and were able to continue plotting it all the way to Frankfurt where were many combats en-route. A diversionary raid on Mannheim did not draw the fighters away from the main attack until after the raid was over, but the return flight was quieter.
A total of 41 aircraft - 27 Halifaxes and 14 Lancasters - were lost, including one aircraft from 576 Squadron.
