William Dickie was born 8 February 1924 in Saltcoats, Stevenston, Ayrshire, SCotland, son of William Dickie (? - 1978) and Margaret Alexander (? - 1958). He had a sister Margaret Grant (1921 - ?) - later Margaret McKelvie. Margaret was lining in Saltcoats in 2002. William attended Androssan Academy, Ayrshire.
